What is glucosamine?
Glucosamine is found in abundance inside cartilage, which acts as a cushion to protect joints. In addition, it supports the development of other tissues such as tendons, which are crucial for maintaining joint health.
As horses mature, they begin to produce less glucosamine and so become less adept at regenerating cartilage. This is why joint complications usually come to the fore in older horses – but also in high-performing horses who endure the burden of daily exercise on their joints.
Benefits of glucosamine for horses
Through its contribution to building cartilage, glucosamine delivers the following benefits for equines:
- Aids in the formation and repair of cartilage, which cushions and protects joints.
- Helps to reduce inflammation and alleviate joint pain.
- Can improve joint mobility and flexibility, allowing for easier movement.
- May help to prevent further joint damage and deterioration.
- Can promote overall joint health, especially in older horses or those subject to frequent exercise and stress on their joints.
- May support hoof health in horses via the formation of connective tissues and stimulating blood flow.
Does my horse need glucosamine?
Studies indicate that administering glucosamine to horses can help to reduce inflammation and prevent further damage. So, if your horse is experiencing joint problems such as restricted mobility or joint-related injuries, then glucosamine is a viable option.
Glucosamine is also recommended as a daily supplement for horses partaking in regular exercise or competition, which places significant stress on their joints.
