What is MSM?
MSM – or methyl-sulfonyl methane as it’s technically known – is found naturally within humans, animals and some foods. It is a building block of the tissues surrounding joints, such as tendons and cartilage. Natural levels of MSM decline in dogs as they age and this has a direct impact on their joint health. It is for this reason that joint problems primarily occur in older dogs – or highly active dogs whose joints are put under stress on a daily basis.
Benefits of MSM for dogs
Through its role as a building block of cartilage and other connective tissues, MSM helps to:
- Reduce joint inflammation
- Promote joint mobility and range of motion
- Strengthen the structure of joints
- Assist with the reduction of joint pain
- Protect joints against further damage
Does my dog need MSM?
The research around MSM as a joint supplement highlights its ability to assist with mobility and the joint health of dogs in general. So, if your dog has poor joint health, MSM can provide a natural means of addressing this.
MSM can also be used proactively to protect against future joint issues. The proactive use of MSM is of particular importance if your dog is one of the breeds that is statistically more likely to develop mobility and joint issues in their advancing years, such as: labradors, spaniels, varieties of mountain dog, rottweilers, retrievers and German shepherds.
